How Big Are the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloons?
The giant character balloons in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade are usually about 45 to 60 feet tall (14 to 18 m), roughly as tall as a five-story building. New York City caps them at 70 feet tall, 78 feet long and 40 feet wide (21 × 24 × 12 m). A typical giant holds about 12,000 cubic feet (340 m³) of helium and is walked down the street by up to 90 handlers.
Real sizes of famous parade balloons
Macy's publishes the size of each giant balloon when it is new. Here are some official figures, alongside the city's limit.
| Balloon | Tall | Long | Wide | Handlers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kermit the Frog (2012) | 61 ft (18.6 m) | 78 ft (23.8 m) | 36 ft (11 m) | – |
| Smokey Bear (2019) | 51 ft (15.5 m) | – | – | 40 |
| Sonic the Hedgehog (2011) | 50 ft (15.2 m) | 65 ft (19.8 m) | 37 ft (11.3 m) | – |
| Astronaut Snoopy (2019) | 49 ft (14.9 m) | 43 ft (13.1 m) | 29 ft (8.8 m) | 90 |
| SpongeBob and Gary (2019) | 44 ft (13.4 m) | 46 ft (14 m) | 36 ft (11 m) | 90 |
| City limit since 1998 | 70 ft (21.3 m) | 78 ft (23.8 m) | 40 ft (12.2 m) |
Length counts too. Kermit, at 78 feet long, used the city's full length limit, about two 40-foot school buses end to end.
How much helium is in a parade balloon?
An average giant balloon holds about 12,000 cubic feet of helium (about 340 m³) and takes around 90 minutes to fill. That is enough gas to fill about ten 12 × 12-foot bedrooms with 8-foot ceilings.
Helium is lighter than air, which is why a balloon this size floats even though it is made of heavy fabric. It is also why the balloons need so many people holding on.
How many people does it take to fly one?
The biggest balloons need about 90 handlers, smaller giants about 40. Each handler holds a line, and Macy's asks that handlers weigh at least 120 pounds (54 kg). For a 90-person team, that is at least 10,800 pounds (4.9 t) of people anchoring one balloon.
How many handlers does a big Macy's balloon need?
Up to about 90. Every one weighs at least 120 lb (54 kg), so a full team adds up to more than 5 tons of people.
Why there are size and wind limits
In 1997 high winds pushed a six-story Cat in the Hat balloon into a lamppost at 72nd Street and Central Park West, injuring four people. A city task force then set the size limits above and a wind rule: balloons do not fly if sustained winds top 23 mph (37 km/h) or gusts top 34 mph (55 km/h). On a very windy Thanksgiving, the giants can be kept on the ground.
The 2026 parade is the 100th
The first Macy's parade marched in 1924, and three were cancelled during World War II (1942 to 1944), so the parade on Thursday, November 26, 2026 is officially the 100th. It starts at 8:30 a.m. in every US time zone on NBC and Peacock, with what Macy's calls a record lineup of 100 inflatables.
Returning balloons include Underdog, flying for the first time since 1984, Felix the Cat and the Blue Hippopotamus, last seen in 1931. Felix was the parade's first character balloon in 1927, carried on sticks; helium balloons arrived the following year. Macy's has not yet published sizes for the 2026 newcomers, and we will add them here when it does.
Frequently asked questions
What is the biggest Macy's parade balloon allowed?
New York City limits balloons to 70 feet (21.3 m) tall, 78 feet (23.8 m) long and 40 feet (12.2 m) wide. The limits were set by a city task force in 1998, after the 1997 Cat in the Hat accident.
How tall is the Snoopy balloon?
The Astronaut Snoopy balloon that debuted in 2019 is 49 feet (14.9 m) tall, 43 feet (13.1 m) long and 29 feet (8.8 m) wide, and it is flown by 90 handlers.
How much helium does a Macy's balloon use?
An average giant balloon holds about 12,000 cubic feet (340 m³) of helium and takes about 90 minutes to inflate.
Do the balloons fly if it is windy?
Not in strong wind. Under New York City rules, the giant balloons do not fly if sustained winds are above 23 mph (37 km/h) or gusts are above 34 mph (55 km/h).
Is the 2026 Macy's parade the 100th?
Yes. The parade began in 1924 and skipped 1942 to 1944, so the parade on November 26, 2026 is the 100th, according to Macy's.
